Stanley Park
Stanley Park is a public park that lies along the downtown area of Vancouver located in British Columbia, Canada and is almost completely surrounded by the water bodies that comprise Vancouver Harbour and English Bay. The park has a long and rich history and was one of the first areas that was explored in the city. It was a popular place for indigenous people for centuries prior to when it was colonized by the British at the time of 1858. The park's name is derived from Lord Stanley of Preston, who was the governor general of Canada from 1888 to 1893. While in his administration, he helped to establish a number of important establishments of culture located in Vancouver and included Stanley Park. The park was initially designed as a park of temperance, in which people could go to relax and enjoy a picnic away from the rowdiness and drunkenness of the city.
